How to Burn a Candle Properly
To get the most out of your candle and enjoy it safely, follow these simple steps:
1. Trim the Wick
Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). This helps prevent smoking, uneven burning, and excessive flame.
2. Let the Wax Pool
Allow the candle to burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the container (usually 1–2 hours). This helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn.
3. Burn in a Safe Spot
Always burn candles on a heat-resistant, stable surface, away from drafts, flammable items, pets, and children.
4. Don’t Burn Too Long
Limit each burn session to no more than 4 hours. Extinguish the candle, let it cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
5. Put It Out Safely
Use a snuffer or gently blow out the candle to avoid splashing hot wax. Don’t use water—it can cause the wax to splatter or the container to crack.
6. Stop When It’s Low
Discontinue use when 1/2 inch (1 cm) of wax remains to prevent heat damage to the container or surface underneath.
